When the Deputy Minister announced that every region would run Active Threat drills, most teams planned simple walk‑throughs or drills. DJ built something different.
Drawing on years of law enforcement, federal intelligence, emergency services, and real‑world threat interventions — including intercepting active threats twice, while unarmed — he designed a full, trauma‑informed program that trained staff, Incident Command Teams, triage groups, and liaison roles alongside police and first responders.
The result: the three largest Active Threat drills ever conducted in Canada, involving thousands of staff across BC and Yukon, as well as dozens of smaller drills. He shared it with other departments and colleagues nationally.
These drills didn’t just test systems. They built confidence. They showed people that when everything goes sideways, people are not powerless.
This philosophy shapes every course and service offered today.
DJ Lawrence is a popular guest speaker and an expert in Armed Intruder Response, Emergency Management, Threat and Risk Assessment, and Security Protection with nearly 30 years in government service and 25 years in the private sector, with 24 years as a federal Incident Commander.
He has held key roles in law enforcement, incident command, regional security, and emergency management. DJ led federal earthquake exercises and major Armed Intruder exercises in Canada, training thousands of federal staff, including law enforcement officers.
In the private sector, his experience includes executive protection, event security, and investigations. As a former federal law enforcement officer and intelligence operative, he has firsthand experience working in high‑risk situations.
DJ also volunteers in law enforcement and emergency management, leading deployments and teaching preparedness to many organizations.

Prepared to deploy to run security on the first Wuhan repatriation flight — stepped up when risks were unknown; stood down only when jurisdictional issues resolved.
Acting Superintendent at YVR on 9/11 — managed front‑line operations during one of the most chaotic days in aviation history.
